  1. Preserve before install

Copy the versioned settings directory; the separate cache directory is not a settings backup.

Good to know

UltiMaker Cura is an open-source FFF slicer built around a large settings model and a broad collection of printer and material profiles. Its split between a friendly recommended mode and detailed custom controls makes the same application useful for first prints and tuned production jobs.

Sources reviewed:

Where it fits

Cura is especially useful for mixed-brand workshops that value a large profile ecosystem and want to expose advanced settings only when a job needs them.

Install and update note

Download signed desktop builds from UltiMaker's page and use the GitHub release notes to check changes and known issues. Cura keeps settings in versioned folders, so preserve the relevant folder or export profiles before a major-version migration.

    Where
Operating-system user data → Cura version directory
    Contains
    • Windows · %APPDATA%\cura\$CURA_VERSION
    • macOS · ~/Library/Application Support/Cura/$CURA_VERSION
    • Linux · ~/.local/share/cura/$CURA_VERSION

Preferences and settings use separate paths; cache is not the settings backup

Keep an untouched copy before migrating, importing or replacing settings.

  2. Printer definition

    Where
    definitions/*.def.json → extruders/*.def.json → optional meshes/*
    Contains
    • machine_width · machine_depth · machine_height
    • machine_center_is_zero · machine_start_gcode · machine_end_gcode
    Check
Unique machine ID and filenames without +, %, or spaces

Treat these values as printer-, nozzle- and material-specific.

  3. Settings scope

    Where
    User → Quality changes → Intent → Quality → Material → Variant → Definition changes → Definition
    Contains
    • Instance profile · .inst.cfg
    • Machine / extruder definition · .def.json
    Check
The first profile in the stack that supplies a value determines that setting

Confirm whether the action affects one preset, a project or the entire configuration set.

Common questions

Why does Cura expose so many print settings?

Cura is designed around hundreds of configurable settings and community-maintained profiles. Most can remain hidden until Custom mode is needed, so profile defaults still provide a practical starting point.

Check the source ↗
Where does Cura store profiles and preferences?

The official reference lists versioned locations: AppData on Windows, Library/Application Support on macOS and .config plus .local/share on Linux. Cura's Help menu can also open the configuration folder.

Check the source ↗
Who maintains profiles for third-party printers in Cura?

UltiMaker maintains Cura as a platform and its own printer support, while support for many other printers is community-maintained. Check the selected machine definition and profile rather than assuming every preset has the same maintainer.

Check the source ↗
What is the safest way to move a tuned Cura setup to a new major version?

Keep the existing version until a representative project has been checked in the new build. Back up or export the profiles first because Cura separates user data by application version.

A quick check before installing
0/3

A project file is not an installer

A .3mf file holds model or project data. Opening it does not install the slicer. After opening a project, check the printer, nozzle and material settings.

Check the official requirements

Files are hosted by the developers. Before installing, check their system requirements and release notes. A file labelled for your platform does not establish the minimum OS version.
