3D printer acceleration calculator

Check whether a straight move is long enough to reach a target speed, and estimate its ideal time.

When this helps

Check whether a straight move is long enough to reach a target speed, and estimate its ideal time. Start with Target speed; this calculator reports Reachable peak speed.

Method

Acceleration distance = speed² ÷ (2 × acceleration). A move from and back to rest needs twice that distance; shorter moves peak at √(acceleration × distance).

Worked example

Example inputs

Target speed
200 mm/s
Acceleration
5000 mm/s²
Move length
50 mm

Calculated outputs

Distance to target speed
4 mm
Distance to accelerate and decelerate
8 mm
Reachable peak speed
200 mm/s
Ideal move time
0.29 s

How to read the result

With these example inputs, Reachable peak speed is 200 mm/s. Use that value for the setting or decision named above, and read the other outputs as supporting checks.

Common mistake

Do not leave Target speed at the example value of 200 mm/s unless it matches your own measurement.

Assumptions and limits

An ideal straight move from rest to rest with constant, symmetric acceleration. Firmware look-ahead, corner velocity, input shaping, extrusion and machine limits can change real motion.
