  1. Preserve before install

Export Config Bundle to capture all profiles; a single Export Config contains only the selected presets.

Source review:

Good to know

Slic3r is the original open-source project started in 2011 to turn 3D models into printer toolpaths and G-code. It provides a desktop Plater, detailed configuration and a scriptable command-line interface.

Sources reviewed:

Where it fits

It remains distinctive for lean RepRap-era workflows and batch automation: the same slicer can be driven from its GUI or scripted with explicit export and print settings.

Install and update note

Windows is distributed as a ZIP without an installer; keep the libexec folder beside the executables. On macOS, drag the app from the DMG to Applications. On Linux, extract and run the shell script, and install the distro’s freeglut package as noted on the download page.

Menus, folders and commands

  1. Command line and automation

    Where
    slic3r [ACTION] [OPTIONS] model.stl
    Contains
    • --export-gcode · --export-stl · --export-amf · --export-3mf
    • --merge · --repair · --scale · --split
    Check
CLI starts from factory defaults unless a configuration is supplied with --load

Make settings explicit in automation; command-line mode may not inherit the active GUI presets.

  2. Profiles and transfer

    Where
File → Export Config / Export Config Bundle
    Contains
    • Selected presets · .ini
    • Complete profile set · one bundle
    Check
Load Config does not save imported values as named presets automatically

Confirm whether the action affects one preset, a project or the entire configuration set.

  3. Project files

    Where
Model input → format capability check → Plater / CLI
    Contains
    • STL · geometry only
    • OBJ · materials / textures not used
    • AMF · materials + metadata + constellations
    Check
Format support does not imply every material, texture or curved-triangle feature is retained

Inspect the generated geometry or toolpath before sending it to a printer.

Common questions

Which model formats does Slic3r accept?

The manual lists STL, OBJ, AMF and 3MF.

Check the source ↗
Can Slic3r be automated from the command line?

Yes. It can slice models, export several formats and receive the GUI’s slicing options as command-line switches.

Check the source ↗
What is the Plater?

It is the workspace for loading and arranging one or more models before slicing.

Check the source ↗
Does the Windows package use an installer?

No. Extract the ZIP and run Slic3r.exe; do not move or delete the adjacent libexec folder.

A quick check before installing
0/3

A project file is not an installer

A .3mf file holds model or project data. Opening it does not install the slicer. After opening a project, check the printer, nozzle and material settings.

Check the official requirements

Files are hosted by the developers. Before installing, check their system requirements and release notes. A file labelled for your platform does not establish the minimum OS version.
