Volumetric flow

Estimate flow from extrusion width, layer height and print speed.

When this helps

Estimate flow from extrusion width, layer height and print speed. Start with Extrusion width; this calculator reports Rounded bead flow.

Method

Rounded bead area = height × (width − height) + π × height² ÷ 4. Flow = area × speed; rectangular estimate = width × height × speed.

Worked example

Example inputs

Extrusion width
0.45 mm
Layer height
0.2 mm
Print speed
100 mm/s

Calculated outputs

Rounded bead flow
8.141593 mm³/s
Rectangular estimate flow
9 mm³/s
Rounded bead area
0.081416 mm²

How to read the result

With these example inputs, Rounded bead flow is 8.141593 mm³/s. Use that value for the setting or decision named above, and read the other outputs as supporting checks.

Common mistake

Do not leave Extrusion width at the example value of 0.45 mm unless it matches your own measurement.

Assumptions and limits

For supported lines with width at least layer height. Bridge extrusion differs. This does not measure your hotend’s capacity.
